Tesla Takes Legal Action in Sweden to Secure License Plates Amid Labor Dispute
A judicial official reported today, Tuesday, that the giant company Tesla has filed a request with a Swedish court demanding that the transport agency provide license plates for its customers, after postal workers blocked them as part of a broader labor dispute.
A court official noted that Tesla (after losing several appeals in other courts) has now resorted to the administrative court in Karlstad to challenge the decision and is seeking to compel the transport agency to provide license plates to buyers through alternative delivery methods other than postal delivery.
Tesla clarified that it offers terms that exceed or match those demanded by the union, and that it is finding ways to keep operations running, including hiring non-union employees.
In turn, the Swedish labor union affirmed that Tesla must adapt to Swedish labor market practices, noting that it is not unreasonable for unions to ask large global companies to adjust their policies to align with local regulations.
Tesla (led by billionaire Elon Musk) is facing a dispute in Sweden due to its refusal to sign a collective agreement with unions, which has prevented the union from negotiating on behalf of workers regarding their rights.
The conflict began in October 2023 when a group of Tesla mechanics went on strike, and since then, more than 12 unions have announced solidarity measures that included port workers, electricians, maintenance staff, postal workers, and others.
In terms of trading, Tesla's share (NASDAQ: TSLA) fell by 1.83% or $7.54 per share, trading near $403.51 during pre-market U.S. trading.
