Japanese stocks close with a decline, but the Nikkei achieves its biggest weekly gain in two months.
The main Japanese stock index, Nikkei, declined during trading on Friday after four consecutive sessions of gains. However, it still recorded the largest weekly gains since the end of September, which is more than two months ago.
In terms of trading, the Nikkei 225 index closed the session down by 0.77%, finishing the day at 39,091.17 points, after falling earlier in the session to below the psychological level of 39,000 points. Nevertheless, the Nikkei ended the week with gains of about 2.5% or equivalent to 966 points. At the same time, the broader TOPIX index also fell by 0.55%, closing at 2,727.22 points.
Stocks related to the chip sector were among the prominent losers, declining on the back of losses in chip companies on Wall Street yesterday. Shares of Advantest, a manufacturer of chip testing equipment and supplier to the American company Nvidia, fell by 3.25%, making it the biggest loser on the Nikkei index, while shares of semiconductor manufacturing giant Tokyo Electron dropped by 2.58%.
In contrast, shares of companies in the aviation sector were the best performers among the 33 industrial groups listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with the sector index rising by 0.73% as crude oil prices fell. The automotive sector also performed positively, with Nissan shares rising by 2.65%, and Mazda shares increasing by 1.54%, while Toyota’s share dipped marginally by 0.11%.
