In a press release issued on Friday morning, the UK Competition and Markets Authority announced that its independent investigation group has informed it of the results of the evaluation concerning the market for mobile browsers. The British regulatory authority clarified that the group's experts have recommended conducting an investigation into the practices of the two American technology companies, Apple and Google, under the new competition regulations in digital markets, which are set to come into effect in January of next year. According to the statement from the Competition and Markets Authority, the group of experts responsible for the investigation found that Apple's rules restrict other competitors' ability to offer new and innovative features that could benefit consumers. In addition, the authority's experts stated that the revenue-sharing agreement between Apple and Google significantly reduces their financial incentives to compete in mobile browsers on Apple’s iOS operating system. The UK regulatory experts also accused Apple and Google of manipulating users' choice of mobile browsers to make their browsers the most obvious or easy option for customers. The Competition and Markets Authority in the UK indicated that it would make a decision regarding a potential investigation into Apple and Google in March of next year. This follows a day after losses incurred by Google's shares, after the U.S. Department of Justice called on the federal court to rule that Google must sell its leading browser, Chrome, indicating that the company uses it in monopolistic practices. Alphabet's shares, which owns Google, continued to lose ground in pre-market trading today, dropping by nearly 1%, after closing yesterday's session down by about 4.5% for both Class A and Class B shares.
