Report: Nissan is considering reducing its workforce in the United States by 1,000 employees.
Kyodo News reported on Thursday that the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan Motors has decided to reduce its workforce at its branches in the United States by 6% of its total employees in the country.
Kyodo explained that the possible reduction could involve letting go of about 1,000 employees from Nissan's workforce in the United States through an early retirement plan. This is part of the global restructuring efforts being carried out by the Japanese automaker to improve its business performance and reduce expenses.
This comes after Nissan had previously announced its plans to cut its global workforce by about 9,000 employees as part of a strategy to reduce costs and streamline its asset portfolio. The company also stated that it plans to reduce its global production capacity by 20%.
Earlier, Nissan Motors CEO Makoto Uchida revealed that he will voluntarily cut his monthly salary by 50%, effective from this November. Other members of the company's executive committee are expected to follow the CEO's lead with similar wage reductions.
