Trump vows to impose very large tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
On Tuesday evening, elected President Donald Trump stated that he intends to impose significant tariffs on certain goods imported from both Mexico and Canada, estimated to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, in order to pressure the two countries to stop the flow of illegal immigration and the illegal shipments of fentanyl being transported across the borders into the United States.
Trump's statements on this matter included the following:
- The United States must take appropriate measures with Canada and Mexico regarding trade with the United States.
- The U.S. administration will do its utmost to ensure that the United States has a trade policy that does not allow for any loopholes that other countries could exploit to circumvent the matter.
- We will work to compensate for the losses the United States incurs due to the illegal practices of Canada and Mexico by imposing extremely high tariffs on the two countries.
