On Monday, the American news agency Reuters reported that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau might resign, stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party, although it noted that Trudeau has not made a definitive decision on this matter yet.

According to a report from the Globe and Mail newspaper, a source close to Trudeau indicated that an announcement could come later on Monday, marking the end of Trudeau's nine-year tenure in office, which would leave the party without a permanent leader at a time when polls suggest that the Liberals are likely to lose to the opposing Conservatives in the upcoming elections, which must take place by late October.

While the timing of Trudeau's announcement regarding his resignation remains uncertain, sources suggest it could come before an emergency meeting scheduled for liberal legislators on Wednesday. An increasing number of Liberal parliamentarians—concerned by negative polling and recent losses in by-elections—have publicly urged Trudeau to step down.

However, so far, the Prime Minister's office has not commented on the situation, and Trudeau's agenda for Monday includes a virtual cabinet committee meeting on Canada-U.S. relations. It is also not yet clear whether Trudeau will resign immediately or remain as Prime Minister until a new Liberal leader is chosen.

Trudeau—who became the leader of the Liberal Party in 2013—had previously resisted calls to resign, but his leadership has faced increasing challenges, especially after an internal dispute with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in December when Trudeau attempted to demote her after she opposed his spending proposals. Freeland resigned, accusing Trudeau of focusing on political maneuvering instead of Canada’s higher interests.
