Data released by Statistics Canada on Friday showed negative performance in retail sales data for Canada in November, with retail sales growing by 0.6% month-on-month, which is below expectations of a 0.7% increase. The previous reading recorded a growth of 0.4% in October, which was revised upwards to 0.6%.
On the other hand, the core retail sales index (excluding car sales) recorded a growth of 0.1% in November, which was higher than market expectations that indicated a growth of only 0.3%. This followed a 0.9% increase in the same index in October, which was revised to 1.1%.
It is worth noting that this index measures the change in the total value of inflation-adjusted sales at the retail level. Additionally, this index is a measure of the value of goods sold by retailers based on a sample of retail stores of various types and sizes, and the data includes all sales conducted through the internet.
