S&P Global released the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data for the manufacturing and services sectors in Germany for December on Monday morning. The data was negative, with the manufacturing sector continuing to be in contraction, while the services sector recovered, moving from contraction to growth.
According to the data, the preliminary reading of the PMI for the manufacturing sector in Germany this month recorded a contraction at 42.5 points, which was lower than market expectations that indicated it would be around 43.1 points. The previous reading for November was 43.0 points.
This index measures the level of activity among purchasing managers in the manufacturing sector and is based primarily on the original survey data collected from 1,000 companies in the German manufacturing and services sectors. It is based on about 85% of the total responses to the PMI survey each month, and a reading above 50 indicates growth, while a reading below 50 reflects contraction.
At the same time, the preliminary reading of the PMI for the services sector in Germany recorded growth at 51.0 points during December, which was better than expectations that indicated it would be 49.5 points. The previous reading recorded for the index in November was 49.3 points.
The index measures the level of activity among purchasing managers based on surveys conducted in the services sector. The German Services PMI relies on data collected from approximately 500 companies in the services sector. The index tracks several variables such as sales, employment, inventories, and prices in Germany. It is worth noting that the preliminary estimates are based on about 85% of the total responses to the PMI survey each month.
