On Thursday, the European Union's statistics office (Eurostat) released data on retail sales in the Eurozone for November, which showed negative results and were worse than market expectations.

According to the data, retail sales in the Eurozone recorded an annual growth of 1.9% in November, which was better than market expectations that predicted a growth of about 1.7%, after retail sales grew by 3% in the previous October, which was revised upward from 2.9%.

On a monthly basis, retail sales in the Eurozone contracted by 0.5%, which was worse than market forecasts of a contraction of only 0.3%. The previous reading in October showed a growth in retail sales in the Eurozone of 0.5%.

The retail sales index measures the change in the total value of retail sales within the Eurozone, reflecting a clear picture of the retail sector in the short term, which accounts for about 5% of the total value added to the economies of the Eurozone. Generally, a high reading is seen as bullish for the euro (EUR), while a low reading is viewed as bearish for the euro currency.
