Saudi Arabia Increases U.S. Treasury Holdings to $143.9 Billion
The U.S. Department of the Treasury's monthly report for September 2024 revealed that Saudi Arabia has significantly increased its holdings of U.S. Treasury securities, bringing the total to $143.9 billion, marking an increase of $1.1 billion compared to August 2024. The report also highlighted a substantial annual growth of $26.8 billion compared to the same period in the previous year, showcasing a steady upward trend in Saudi investments in U.S. assets.
This rise marks the fifth consecutive month of growth, with Saudi holdings increasing by $100 million in August, $4 billion in June, $900 million in May, and $2.4 billion in July. The total increase from May to September 2024 amounted to $8.5 billion. This consistent growth further solidifies Saudi Arabia’s position as a key player in global financial markets.
The report confirmed that Saudi Arabia maintained its position as the 17th largest holder of U.S. treasuries. It also noted that Saudi Arabia’s holdings are diversified across both long-term securities, valued at $113.4 billion, and short-term treasury bills, which total $30.5 billion.
This increase reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing strategy to expand its portfolio of U.S. assets while balancing long- and short-term investments. Such diversification ensures the stability of Saudi Arabia's financial reserves, providing a solid foundation for future growth and sustainable returns.
