Data released by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Thursday showed that retail sales in Germany experienced a significant recovery in September, coming in higher than market expectations.

According to the data, German retail sales increased by 3.8% year-on-year in September, exceeding market forecasts which anticipated a growth of only 1.6%, after August's reading showed a growth of 2.1% in the country’s retail sales.

The Federal Statistical Office in Germany stated that retail sales rose by 1.2% month-on-month in September, following a 1.6% increase in August, while forecasts anticipated a contraction in retail sales of 0.5% in September.

It is worth mentioning that this index measures the change in the total value of sales adjusted for inflation in the retail sector, excluding cars and fuel stations. Consumer spending constitutes a significant portion of the economy, which is why traders constantly monitor spending trends. Additionally, retail sales measure the improvement in the economic situation of consumers. Notably, this index not only reflects the overall performance of the economy but also the different trends in the retail trade.
